Swell period: the number that decides your session.

Two foot at 6 seconds and two foot at 16 seconds are not the same wave. Here's why period — not height — is the first thing to read on any forecast.

Most people open a surf forecast and look at one thing: how big is it. It's a reasonable instinct, and it's also why so many sessions disappoint. Wave height tells you how tall the swell is. It says almost nothing about how that swell will actually break when it reaches your sandbar. For that, you need to read the period.

Swell period is the time, in seconds, between two passing wave crests in the open ocean. It is a quiet number that sits next to the height on every forecast — and once you learn to read it, you stop getting fooled by a chart that looks good on paper.

01What period actually measures

A long period means the swell was generated by a powerful, distant storm and has had time to organise into clean, evenly-spaced lines. A short period means the energy is local, choppy and disorganised — often just wind slop that hasn't travelled far enough to sort itself out.

The practical difference is energy underneath the surface. Long-period swell carries its power deep below the waterline. When it hits a reef or bank, that deep energy stands up fast and breaks with force. Short-period swell is all on top — it arrives weak and tends to crumble.

The same two-foot reading can be a powerless ripple or a punchy, well-overhead wave. Period is what separates them.

You don't need to memorise physics. Over time these rough bands will become second nature when you scan a forecast:

In the forecast view, period sits directly under the wave height for every hour, in seconds. Watch for the moment a swell climbs past 13s — that's usually the window worth setting an alarm for.

03Reading two swells at once

Real conditions are rarely a single, tidy swell. You'll often see a primary swell, a secondary swell and a wind wave stacked on the same chart, each with its own height, period and direction. Surfcast separates them so you can see which one is doing the work.

Here's a simplified hour pulled apart the way the app draws it — same height, very different waves:

The primary swell at 15 seconds is the one that will actually stand up and break cleanly. The wind wave at 5 seconds just adds texture and chop on the surface. Read top-down, and you already know what the session will feel like before you've left the house.

04Putting it together

Next time you check the forecast, train yourself to read in this order: period first, then height, then wind, then tide. Period tells you whether there's real, organised energy in the water. Height tells you how much. Wind tells you whether the surface will be clean. Tide tells you when.
